Product description

This neat little domed feeder has a roof to keep food dry in wet weather, and because it's clear, it gives you a great view of the birds!

Made from tough polycarbonate, the dome protects feeding birds and the tray contents from rain and snow. It also slides up and down so you can deter larger birds if you wish.

As the name suggests, it's a big hit with robins!

  • Perfect for feeding seeds, suet or mealworms.
  • Measures 155 mm (w) x 155 mm (d) x 225 mm (h).
  • Dome diameter: 15cm.
  • Made from tough polycarbonate, so it won't yellow or crack.
  • The tray features drainage holes to prevent waterlogged seed.
  • Lifetime guarantee.

Great success
We already had Robins and a variety of small birds but also lots of Wood Pigeons. I put this on the floor as this enables you to lower it further so that the Robins can reach the food without having to perch on the edge and the Blackbirds can too if they are careful and persevere. Robins often feed on insects on the floor anyway so they took to it straightaway. The Starlings have not tried - yet! We have had it for 4 months and are so pleased that we have bought 2 more so that we can soak one in a bucket of hot soapy water once a week and air dry it for days to ensure no chemicals but no bacteria. Although plastic, it is strong and well made with an adjustable stop device so that the dome cannot be lifted. The Wood Pigeons are enthralled by it and walk round and round it mesmerised by the sight of the food but unable to get in and scoff the lot! Another bonus is that a little Bank Vole comes to take food.
If you would like more Robins in your garden try letting your hedges and shrubs grow and provide more safe nesting sites. Don't be too tidy as they will use dried fallen leaves as a base to their nests and more plant material from dried grasses etc to make the nest. We do not use chemicals to flea treat our dog so can safely put out the loose fur which is quickly taken for nesting material. Bear in mind that sheep are treated with chemicals too unless organically reared.
And remember that it is NO MOW MAY!! If you are sick of the sound of lawnmowers and the smell of chemicals, Let your lawn grow for all wildlife :-)

A mixed blessing
One big problem with the feeder in that magpies and crows which frequent our garden are intelligent enough to either hang on to the bottom part and feed (crows) or fly up and bash the feeder so it swings sufficiently to spill feed onto the ground from where it is eaten (mainly magpies).
The robins have now given up using the feeder as there is rarely food in it when they fly in.

RSPB response

The lid can be adjusted to deter larger birds but if you have a large population of these birds, a Squirrel Buster might be the solution as it should close if multiple larger birds are feeding at the same time.

Pointless
After several adjustments to create the smallest gap feasible for a robin to feed I am currently watching starlings raid the feeder. Now a JackDaw has joined the banquet whilst a robin looks on from the nearby fence. Lowered a further 1cm the robin is flummoxed but starlings can still hang on to the bottom of the feeder and reach inside. Next I’ll recycle this plastic nonsense and try a weighted feeder.

RSPB response

The lid can be adjusted to deter larger birds. However Starlings are on the UK Red List for Birds of Conservation Concern and do need support to help boost population numbers.
